When keepin it real goes wrong

Archive for August, 2006When keepin it real goes wrongYou know you’ve been hacking a little bit too much when you start having nightmares that the _GET and _POST arrays are starting to randomly merge with each other inexplicably. Warmth in the morningsSometimes when I get up in the morning and get in the shower, I completely forget why it is I’m standing there. I don’t soap up or put shampoo in my hair — I just stand there, kind of half asleep, drenching myself in steaming hot water. Who’s Winning the War on Terror? So we’ve got this War on Terror thing going on. We’re killing some arabs, sure. We’re destroying some cities, sure. Rooting out some insurgents hiding in caves, fantastic. We’ve got all this fighting going on in the front lines in the middle east… israel, iran, afghanistan, iraq. So much fighting going on, so many battles being waged. The really odd thing is though, despite the fact that the middle east is where the battles are occuring, the battles are being WON in completely different places. Like, the World Trade Center in NY. There was no battle going on in downtown NY on september 11th, but the Terrorists clearly won something when they flew two commuter jets into the Twin Towers. Then again, just a few days ago, in London. A huge terrorist plot was foiled that if, had it executed, would have matched or exceeded the 9/11 attacks. This is in London! Thats so far away from all the actual fighting in Iraq. It just seems so odd to me that the places we’re fighting the battles don’t seem to match up at all with the places we’re winning and losing the battles. Going a step further to then look at it from ideological perspectives. What are the terrorists goals? To terrorize us? Make us afraid… control our behavior through fear. Air flight travel dropped so dramatically after the London thing that the price of oil actually went down due to reduced demand. I can’t get onto an airplane now without taking off my shoes and throwing away my Coca Cola I just bought. The lady sitting next to me doesn’t have any formula for her baby, and if you’d planned on putting on sunscreen when you got off the plane, well, tough shit. Better buy some when you land. So who’s winning, exactly? Lots of people have died over in the middle east, fighting this war. There’s no denying that. But this is 2006, wars aren’t decided on how many men you kill anymore, despite the fact that thats how the US is playing it. We’re not any safer. Every day that goes by seems to get less and less safe. President Bush himself said we would be fighting the “War on Terror” for years to come. Tensions worldwide just seem to keep escalating, with no resolution in sight. No one’s got any solutions beyond “kill them all!” Too bad both sides have the same idea. And it seems to me that its the terrorists who are doing it more effectively. Quality over Quantity, they say. Take down a couple passenger trans atlantic flights and the world comes to a stand still. Kill 5,000 insurgent Iraqi soldiers and it barely makes page 5 of the world news section. You can’t fight ghosts with machine guns, and you can’t win an ideological war with tanks or jet fighters. And I predict it will be much, much too late before the people in charge of this country finally figure that the fuck out. |
